Playoffs 2016 - Finals Day

A very entertaining club meal and not much sleep later and the Final Sunday is upon us. Following their loss on Saturday, the Elite Diamonds would not play today but would be there to support as the Div One’s played for the D1 Playoff Title and promotion.

10:35 Sunday 29th May 2016 and the puck is dropped as the D1 Diamonds do battle versus the Billingham Wildcats for the final time this season. The Diamonds came out all guns-a-blazing and Reagan Downing (again) set the tone to give the Diamonds a 0-1 lead early in the game. Not long after the Diamonds saw themselves with a two-goal cushion following a goal from defense(wo)man Kelly McBride (a very good time to score your first goal of the season!) End of the first period, the Diamonds look comfortable with a 0-2 lead and the second period also passes without hitch, thanks to on form goaltender, Charlotte Cook.

The third period of the final begins and Billingham start the stronger of the teams, scoring a goal early to cut the Diamonds lead to 1-2. The following ten minutes remain tense but scoreless as Kingston search for a brace and Billingham press for a game-tying goal. Wildcats increase pressure by pulling their goaltender for an extra attacker but can’t find the back of the net. Finally, the Diamonds clear the zone and (yes, you guessed it) Reagan Downing fires home into the empty net.

The Diamonds have done it! The team in blue flood onto the ice and a mad group hug/pile-on ensues around netminder Cook as they claim victory 1-3 over the Billingham Wildcats and gain promotion to the Premier League. Handshakes and presentations follow as we thank Billingham for an excellent Final and congratulate them on their League Title. Then come the celebrations, the relief and excitement obvious as captain, Beth Barwell, lifts the cup and is surrounded by her teammates.

The weekend ends in excellent fashion as the Div One Diamonds become the Premier Diamonds. Thanks for having us Division One, bring on the Premier League!!
